ACLU against Facebook
Posted August 27, 2009 – 12:40 in: Silivrenion, syndicatedThe ACLU of Northern California, American Civil Liberties Union, has created a campaign regarding Facebook privacy concerns over one-time-use applications, such as quizzes and polls.
Apparently Facebook has an all-in approach to accepting add-ins and applications — every application you add can, by default, access your profile information. Facebook provides a way to change these settings, but not everyone is familiar enough with Facebook’s security settings to change these.
When someone on Facebook agrees to allow a quiz to access their details in order to take the quiz, the quiz’s configuration is saved for that user in their Applications menu. That quiz can then harvest user information as they see fit, unless the user has overridden Facebook’s default security settings for Applications.
The ACLU is campaigning to try and make Facebook change these policies to an opt-in type, where applications will have to show exactly what data they require before the user accepts that application to their profile.
It will be interesting to see how this one unfolds!
